Animal
Leather is a natural product and each animal has its own physical characteristics. So none of the hides are identical. Read the product description to learn whether the leather suits your application in terms of size, thickness, skin structure, irregularities and external influences.

This also determines the appearance of the leather.

Full Grain | Highest leather quality from the top of the hide. Soft, durable and strong.

Grain suede | Combination of smooth top and soft bottom of the skin. Smoother and stronger than suede.

Split | Leather from the intermediate layer of the skin. Lower quality and less soft and strong than full grain leather.

Suede | Soft split leather with visible skin pores. More fragile and lower quality than grain suede.

Nubuck | Sanded grain leather with a fine structure. Suede feel, but higher quality and (often) with visible markings.

Nappa | Naming for thin, soft and smooth grain leather.

Vegan leather alternative | Animal-free product with a leather look-and-feel, made of vegetable ingredients and plastics.

Characteristics
Tanning method
Tanning method
Processing animal skins into leather. It also determines the appearance.

Chrome tanning | Most common. Provides deep colours, soft and durable leather. Often faster and cheaper than vegetable tanning.

Chrome-free tanning | Chrome has been replaced by other, non-heavy metals or synthetic substances.

Semi-vegetable tanning | A combination of vegetable tanning with other tanning methods, such as chrome or synthetics.

Vegetable tanning | Traditional method with natural substances. This leather is often slightly more rigid and more sensitive to sunlight.

Shrunk | Special process that gives leather a characteristic, visible grain.

Finish
Finish
Leather finish.

Waxed | Often a rough touch. In combination with pull-up, you get color shades when bending or pulling the leather.

Corrected | Irregularities have been eliminated, for example by lightly sanding the grain side.

(Semi)aniline | Coloring method, similar to the effect of ink. The color absorbs into the skin, preserving its natural appearance. May be more sensitive to external influences.

Pigmented | Coloring method, similar to a topcoat. Due to the thicker color layer, the leather is more dense. Often less sensitive to external influences, but the natural appearance is no longer visible.

Crust | Unfinished leather, open structure. Suitable for painting and for 'wet molding', shaping leather.

Printed | A print has been added using a stamping technique, for example a crocodile or python look.

Firmness (1-5)
Firmness (1-5)
Degree of flexibility of the leather. We apply a scaling from 1 to 5: flexible (1), average (3) and firm (5).

Keep in mind that the thickness of the leather also affects the firmness. A leather collection with a thickness of 1mm and a firmness value of 3, might feel more flexible than another leather collection that is thicker and also has a firmness value of 3.

Gloss (1-5)
Gloss (1-5)
The degree of light reflection on the leather. We apply a scaling from 1 to 5: matte (1), silk gloss (3) and high gloss (5).

Application
Application
There are no fixed rules about which leather you can use for which application. The leather worker decides which properties of a collection matches the needs and the application. However, there are a few general things to keep in mind: For example, leather that is especially suitable for shoes can stain. This is not acceptable for bags or furniture. In addition, it is important for the linings of clothing and shoes that leather breathes. Leather for furniture often has extra layers of paint to protect against scratches, for example. We try to inform designers as best as we possibly can about the properties of a collection in order to make the right choice. Are you not sure about an application? Review the specifications, or contact us.

Dimensions
Dimensions
Available dimensions.

Each hide is unique. The stated sizes therefore indicate the total surface and not the exact length and width measurements. The panel size is an exact size. Also consider cutting loss when choosing the right size.

Review the collection size chart to learn what a panel, coupon, quarter hide, half hide and whole hide look like.
Panel - 18 x 12 inches (1.5 ft2)
Quarter hide - approx. 39 x 35.4 inches (9.5-10 ft2)
Half hide - approx. 78.5 x 35.5 inches (19.0-19.5 ft2)
Half hide - approx. 98 x 35.5 inches (24.0-24.5 ft2)
Whole hide - approx. 98 x 71 inches (48-48.5 ft2)
Thickness
Thickness
Leather is a natural product. The thickness can therefore slightly differ per hide and batch. The stated thickness of a leather collection always has a margin of 0.2 mm. If you order a hide with a thickness of 0.6 - 0.8 mm, then your hide has a thickness between 0.6 and 0.8 mm.

What to expect

Quality
We select our hides with great care and try to give the most accurate representation of the leather. Keep in mind that leather is a natural product and can therefore contain natural imperfections.

Colors
Colors on a computer screen may look slightly different in real life. We therefore always recommend ordering a color chart of the collection first. In addition, leather from the same collection may show minor color differences per batch. Some types of leather are also (more) sensitive to external influences. Therefore, always carefully read about the specific properties of the selected leather.

Applications
Since you are the designer we leave creative choices up to you. On our webshop we will advise you as best as possible, but the correct choice depends on your own wishes and the application of the leather. Therefore, always check the specifications carefully. Are you not sure whether a leather collection is suitable for your project? We are happy to tell you more about the specific properties in order to make the best choice.

Sizes
Please refer to the size chart by collection for the skin you order. For instance, half a hide of calfskin may differ in size compared to half a cowhide. While every skin is unique and the stated sizes represent the total surface area you will receive, please note that for our standard skins, dimensions indicate an approximate area rather than exact length and width. For example, if you order a Quarter hide advertised as approx. 78x35.5 inch, the piece could also be 89x31 inch. However, we now offer panels cut to exact dimensions for those projects requiring precise measurements, ensuring you receive a piece of leather with the exact length and width you need. Additionally, please consider some allowance for cutting loss when selecting the right size for your project.
